What is a Hafla?
Most public performances are at restaurants and other venues in New Jersey and the NYC area. If a dancer is not hired by a restaurant, sometimes they will dance at what is commonly referred to as a "Hafla", it is a "get-together" or party for family and friends. Usually hosted by a belly dancer involving performances by multiple dancers to Middle Eastern music (sometimes with live musicians or music on CD/phone), dancers take turns performing for each other and the audience, and sometimes at the end of the show there is open-floor dancing for everyone to get up and party.
